  • Utah licenses both the plumber and the plumbing business. The business license, General Plumbing Contractor P200, must name a licensed master plumber as the person who stands behind it.
  • The handyman exception does not reach plumbing. Utah lets unlicensed people take building jobs under $7,000, but work on a plumbing system inside those jobs still needs a licensed plumbing contractor.

HVAC in Utah

HVAC Contractor (H100)Renews every two years
Insurance you must carry
$1,000,000liability, at least

Requiredif you have employees
  • Utah has no state license for an HVAC technician. The state licenses the business, as an H100 HVAC Contractor, and has journeyman and master licenses only for plumbers and electricians.
  • The rules changed in April 2026. The old S350 class asked for no experience and no trade exam, and $100,000 of insurance. The H100 class that replaced it asks for two years of HVAC work, two exams and $1,000,000 of cover, so guides written before that date are out of date.

Electrical in Utah

General Electrical Contractor (E200)Renews every two years
Insurance you must carry
$1,000,000liability, at least

  • The person and the business each need a Utah license. The General Electrical Contractor license, E200, only goes to a business that names a licensed master electrician as its qualifier.
  • Classroom time halves the road to journeyman. With 576 hours of approved study you need 8,000 hours as a licensed apprentice. Without it the rule asks for 16,000.
